  1. Check and maintain proper tire pressure
  2. Test coolant to ensure cold-weather protection
  3. Check brake lights and other bulbs
  4. Be prepared with an emergency kit in the vehicle
  5. Drive defensively - keep your eyes on the road ahead
  6. Install winter wiper blades
  7. Increase your following distance to compensate for compromised traction
  8. Brake and accelerate more slowly and always watch for ice
  9. Remember that bridge decks freeze first due to the difference in exposure to air
