What's New?
Few changes have been made to the Outback this year. The optional XT package for the Limited gives the models access to the more powerful turbocharged 260-hp 2.4-liter engine. Also, all Limited trims now feature a power sunroof, an 11.6-inch infotainment screen with navigation, driver attention monitoring, and a heated steering wheel.

Design
With its wagon-like body, the Outback has a design aesthetic like many SUVs in the Subaru lineup. However, unlike those other SUVs, the Outback's interior borrows elements from the Subaru Legacy. In base models, there are heated front seats and a power-adjustable driver's seat. However, higher trims offer far more, like a heated steering wheel, a power-adjustable front passenger seat, and heated rear seats. Regardless of the trim, though, there's plenty of cargo space with up to 33 cubic feet behind the second row.
Performance
The new Subaru Outback is powered by the same powertrains as last year - an 182-hp 2.5-liter and an optional 260-hp turbocharged 2.4-liter. Both engines are equipped with all-wheel drive and are mated to a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT).
In the EPA's estimation, the base engine gets about 26 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway. Meanwhile, the turbocharged version has a slight efficiency dip with an estimated 23 mpg city and 30 mpg highway.

Technology
Although the Limited was given several new updated features, the remaining trims have not and still offer the same tech from last year. This includes the base two stacked seven-inch touchscreens and the larger 11.6-inch vertically oriented monitor in higher trims. The larger monitor continues to feature bigger icons and a quicker response time, along with a rotary volume and tuning knob.
With both monitors, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto are standard, but features like navigation, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and wireless device charging are optional. And by upgrading to the Limited and Touring trims, you'll receive a 12-speaker audio system.
Safety
In every new Outback, there's a bundle of advanced driver-aids called Eyesight. With EyeSight, drivers receive forward-collision warnings, automated emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control with lane-keeping assist. But for drivers looking for more advanced tech like blind-spot monitoring and a rear cross-traffic alert, shoppers will need to upgrade to a higher trim.
